The Power of Biblical Fatherhood
There are few roles as sacred, as weighty, and as powerful as that of a father. And yet in a world flooded with opinions about masculinity, parenthood, and leadership, it’s easy to lose sight of what God truly calls fathers to be. In this Father’s Day blog, we reflect on Pastor James Hanna’s bold and timely sermon, The Essentials of Biblical Fatherhood. This message isn’t just for dads—it’s for anyone who wants to understand what it looks like when men rise up in the strength and love of God to lead their homes, disciple their families, and walk in the truth of Scripture.
Pastor Hanna starts by reminding us that the foundation of biblical fatherhood isn’t cultural wisdom or personal preference—it’s God’s Word. That’s the standard. That’s the blueprint. Are we, as fathers and leaders, submitting our opinions, decisions, and home structures to the authority of Scripture? Or are we leaning on our own understanding and risking the same downfall Adam experienced in Genesis? He was not deceived, but disobedient. He knew God’s command, and yet chose otherwise. What might we be choosing when we ignore God’s instructions for our homes?
This message doesn’t pull any punches. Pastor Hanna calls out the dangers of passive fatherhood, the silence of men when they should be leading, and the cultural ideologies that threaten to unseat God’s order. He speaks plainly about the impact of sin and compromise—not just on men, but on everyone connected to them. And he points us back to the deep need for men to be students of the Word so they can lead with truth and not just tradition. Men, are you washing your wives and children in the Word of God? Are you allowing God’s truth to shape how you protect, serve, and guide your home?
But this isn’t just about leading—it’s about discipling. Ephesians 6:4 reminds us that a father’s job is to raise children in the instruction and discipline of the Lord. And that doesn’t happen by accident. Pastor Hanna pushes us to see parenting as a form of worship—a way to exalt Christ in our homes and pass on a legacy of truth. He reminds us that we’re not trying to make carbon copies of ourselves, but warriors for Christ. Are we training our children to stand in truth? Or are we quietly allowing the world to shape them?
Even for those who are not biological fathers, the call to spiritual fatherhood remains. The Bible speaks to mentoring, to pouring into the next generation, to raising up spiritual sons and daughters who will carry the banner of the Gospel forward. Who are you discipling right now? Who are you mentoring? Who’s watching your life as a blueprint for their faith?
And then, Pastor Hanna draws us into the heart of it all—God the Father. He brings us back to Ephesians 1, where we see the God who chose us in love before the foundations of the world. The God whose love was never based on our works, our obedience, or our success. That’s the love we’re called to reflect as fathers. A love that disciplines but never deserts. A love that leads with both truth and tenderness. A love that overflows into every space we touch.
Do you know that kind of love from God the Father? Are you basking in it, drawing strength from it, letting it transform how you love others? Pastor Hanna makes it clear—you can’t reflect what you haven’t received. And the beautiful truth is this: no matter how broken or imperfect your earthly father experience has been, you have a perfect Father in heaven who has always seen you, chosen you, and loved you with unshakable grace.
So what does biblical fatherhood look like in your life? Where do you need to raise the standard? How is God calling you to lead, disciple, and love in a way that reflects His heart?
